Thrifty Way To Dress Up A Wardrobe

For Content

If you are a creative person and you like the idea of having an extensive wardrobe without having to spend a lot of money on one, you just need to be imaginative with what you already have. You probably have everything you need right in your own home to dress up your wardrobe so that just a few outfits can serve almost every purpose you need. Even if your closet is full of t-shirts and basic items, you can dress them up to fit any occasion.

Make a Scarf

You can make a scarf out of any long piece of material. You don't even need to hem it if you don't want to, depending on the material. You can add a scarf to the plainest shirt, trying different knots for different occasions. Try adding a pin of some sort for an added decoration. Get out your sewing machine and follow the steps below.

  1. Cut out a piece of material around 60 inches long and 8 inches wide.
  2. Fold the edges of the material toward the underside of what will be your scarf, using the smallest folds you can make.
  3. Iron the folds.
  4. Repeat steps 2-3.
  5. Sew the edges closed. If you can't get your fold as small as you would like it, try using a decorative stitch on your sewing machine. If your hem is going to be obvious, it may as well be decorative.

Change Hems

All you really need is one small thing that makes your fashion piece different from anyone else's. Try adding a new hem to an old shirt. This works particularly well if your favorite shirt has some stains near the middle or bottom. Your new hem can be as big or small as you want it to be. You can sew it on top of the existing material or cut off the bottom of the shirt and add the new material as a true hem.

  1. Measure the bottom of the existing shirt.
  2. Cut a piece of material as wide as you need it from the place where you need the hem to start to the new bottom of the shirt. (Hint: It might help to put the shirt on so you can measure to see where you want the new bottom to end.) When you measure to see how long you need the material to be, add an inch for seams.
  3. Use your sewing machine to attach the new piece of material to the bottom of the shirt. If your new material is from another shirt, try to keep the hem at the bottom so you don't have to sew a new one. Otherwise, use the hem steps from the scarf project to create a finished look for your shirt.

You really don't have to throw away old clothes or do a lot of shopping for new ones if you have a sewing machine and a bit of creativity. If you don't have extra material or old clothes you want to turn into extra material, consider doing something simple like adding a ribbon or even lampshade trim to the bottom of a shirt to dress it up.
